PAST MEETING SPEAKER: Bryant Baker of Forest Watch

ForestWatch is a local nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization working to protect and restore wild places, wildlife, and watersheds in the Los Padres National Forest, the Carrizo Plain National Monument, and other public lands along California's Central Coast.

What ForestWatch does:

  • Advocate
    • Promote wildlife, wilderness, and watersheds
    • Fight runaway resource abuse on public lands
    • Work to improve public accessW
  • Organize
    • Forest Steward Program
    • Invasive plant removal
    • Trash cleanup
    • Fence removal

Work ForestWatch accomplished in 2016

  • Halted an oil leasing plan for 52,000 acres
  • Helped restore public acess to Matilija Falls
  • Filed a lawsuit which halted fracking on 1 million acres
  • Published an extensive report about illegal target shooting
  • Worked with USFS to scale back unneeded roads

Volunteer

ForestWatch's work to eradicate invasive non-native species is ongoing. Bryant highlighted four major species:

  • Tamarisk
  • Yellow star-thistle (YST)
  • Cape ivy
  • Broom species

They are continuing their efforts to advocate for species protection regulations, monitor activities that might affect rare plants, invasive plant removal, and petition for endangered species protection when appropriate. We are encouraged to Get Involved
